SOUTH AFRICA MARKETS South Africa’s rand was more than one percent lower on Monday as global emerging markets remained on the back foot, while stocks were flat in tandem with global markets.

KENYA MARKETS The Kenyan shilling KES= held steady against the dollar on Monday, underpinned by hard currency inflows from non-governmental organisations and remittances, traders said.

EQUITIES Kenya’s biggest telecoms operator Safaricom SCOM.NR faces a fine of around $4.5 million for failing to connect calls made to smaller firms, according to company and regulatory documents reviewed by Reuters.

NIGERIA EQUITIES Nigerian stocks tumbled 2.75 percent in early trade on Monday to their lowest level in more than a year, dragged down by its biggest listed company, Dangote Cement

NIGERIA CRUDE ExxonMobil XOM.N said on Monday that a blockade by former employees threatens crude production at oil facilities in Nigeria, adding that “disruptions to these operations have the potential to significantly impact revenues.”

AFRICA ECONOMY Chinese President Xi Jinping offered another $60 billion in financing for Africa on Monday and wrote off some debt for poorer African nations while warning against funds going towards “vanity projects”.

GHANA DEBT Ghana is considering a century bond worth $50 billion as part of the West African nation’s plan to secure long-term funding to build critical infrastructure for industrial development, its leader said.
