Deforestation in Colombia increased significantly in 2024, with a 35% rise compared to 2023, according to Environment Minister Susana Muhamad. The area of deforestation reached 1,070 square kilometers (413 square miles) during 2024, marking a notable increase in environmental degradation.
In contrast, 2023 saw a reduction in deforestation in Colombia, with the area falling to slightly more than 792 square kilometers. This was a significant drop from the 1,235 square kilometers reported in 2022, and represented a 23-year low in deforestation rates for the country.
The reported increase in deforestation during 2024 contrasts sharply with the previous year’s decline, indicating a reversal in the country’s recent environmental progress. The figures indicate a concerning trend for the South American nation’s efforts to preserve its forests.
