U.S. President Donald Trump said on Sunday evening that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky could end the war with Russia ‘almost immediately’ by acquiescing to Moscow’s demands.
“President Zelenskyy of Ukraine can end the war with Russia almost immediately, if he wants to, or he can continue to fight. Remember how it started. No getting back Obama given Crimea (12 years ago, without a shot being fired!), and NO GOING INTO NATO BY UKRAINE,” Trump said in a Truth post.
His comments come just before a meeting with Zelensky and European heads of states at the White House on Monday, where they are expected to further discuss an end to the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
The White House said Trump will meet Zelensky at 13:00 ET (17:00 GMT) on Monday, and will engage in a multilateral meeting with European leaders at 15:00 ET.
Trump met Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday, and flagged positive, albeit vague progress in talks. Reports also showed Trump raising the possibility of reaching a long-term peace deal between Russia and Ukraine, instead of a temporary ceasefire.
Media reports said a possible peace deal could involve Ukraine relinquishing swathes of its eastern region, including Donetsk and Luhansk to Russia, while the Kremlin will withdraw from Southern regions of Kherson and Zapopizhzhia.
Ukraine has rejected any notion of ceding land to Russia. Zelensky has also insisted on Ukraine being involved in any ceasefire talks.
Still, the Ukrainian president welcomed offers of security guarantees from the U.S. if a peace deal is reached with Russia.
Trump had last met with Zelensky at the White House in late-February, in a highly contentious meeting that marked little progress towards a resolution in the war. Trump had called Zelensky a “dictator” and had implied that Ukraine was to blame for the hostilities, which have been ongoing since early-2022, when Russia first launched a military offensive against Ukraine.
