The General Court of the European Union on Wednesday reduced Intel’s (NASDAQ:INTC) antitrust fine from 376 million euros ($438 million) to 237.1 million euros, rejecting the U.S. chipmaker’s challenge to overturn the penalty completely.

“An amount of 237,105,540 euros is a more appropriate reflection of the gravity and duration of the infringement at issue,” the Luxembourg-based court stated in its ruling.

The European Commission, which serves as the EU’s competition enforcer, initially imposed the fine in 2023 after the same tribunal had previously thrown out an earlier, much larger penalty of 1.06 billion euros from 2009.

The original case centered on Intel’s actions to block rival Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ:AMD). While the court maintained that Intel had violated antitrust regulations, it determined that a reduced fine better reflected the nature of the infringement.
