Iran’s Foreign Ministry has said fresh American attacks in the Strait of Hormuz violated a ceasefire and international law, Reuters reported on Wednesday.

Tehran accused the U.S. of carrying out strikes on an Iranian oil tanker in the strait and a telecommunications tower on Qeshm Island, the news agency said.

Kuwait and Bahrain bore “clear responsibility” for the strikes, the ministry alleged, adding that U.S. military operations against Iran had stemmed from territory and facilities in those countries.

The ministry vowed to use all available means to respond, stressing that Iran had the right to defend itself, according to Reuters.

On Tuesday evening, U.S. Central Command said it had defended against a new wave of Iranian air strikes on several Middle Eastern countries, and had also struck back against the Islamic Republic.

Central Command (CENTCOM) said it had “successfully defeated” missile and drone attacks from Iran against Kuwait and Bahrain, and had launched strikes on an Iranian ground control station in Qeshm island in response.

CENTCOM said it had also shot down Iranian attack drones that were launched at ships in “regional waters,” and that no military personnel were harmed in the exchange.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) said in a statement that it had struck U.S. 5th Fleet headquarters in Bahrain and an air base in the region as retaliation for earlier U.S. aggression. CENTCOM said the attacks were unsuccessful.

Tuesday’s attacks come after Iranian media reported earlier this week that Tehran had halted indirect negotiations with the United States in the wake of increased tensions in the Middle East, particularly Israeli fighting against Iran-backed Hezbollah militants in Lebanon.

The U.S. and Iran have traded multiple strikes over the past week, raising questions over whether their tenuous ceasefire remained in place.

U.S. President Donald Trump had earlier downplayed reports of Iran halting negotiations, and had said a peace deal was possible in the next week.

But renewed military action in the Middle East raised questions over a peace deal, especially as Washington and Tehran remained at odds over key issues, including Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

Iran also kept the Strait of Hormuz effectively blocked, limiting traffic in the key waterway that supplied about a fifth of the world’s oil demand prior to the war.
